Add text to a PDF

Add text to a PDF by clicking where you want it and typing. It’s the quick way to fill in a form that has no boxes to type into, add a note, or label a drawing.

How to add text to a PDF

  1. Open the PDF

The page appears large enough to work on.

  2. Click to add a text box

It appears where you clicked. Drag it to fine-tune.

  3. Type and style it

Edit the words in the side panel and pick font, size and colour.

  4. Save

Download the PDF with your text on it.

Why it’s easy to get right

What you see is where it lands

Placement in the preview matches the saved file, including on pages that are stored sideways.

Real text

Words are written with standard PDF fonts, so they stay sharp when zoomed and can be searched and copied.

Line breaks and several boxes

Add as many text boxes as you like across any pages. Press Enter for a new line inside one.

Arrow-key nudging

Tab to a box and nudge it with the arrow keys. Hold Shift to move in bigger steps.

Adding text isn’t the same as editing it

This places new text on top of the page. It can’t change words that are already there, because a PDF stores text as individually positioned characters rather than paragraphs that reflow. We’d rather not offer “edit text” until it can be done without wrecking layouts.

Privacy and security

Text is added in your browser. Your PDF, and whatever you type into it, never leave your device.
